Istanbul Taxi Fares May Increase Following Minimum Wage Hike
Following the announcement of the minimum wage increase, the process of price hikes for taxis, one of the public transportation modes in Istanbul, has been initiated.
The Istanbul Chamber of Taxi Drivers submitted a request to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) for an increase in taxi fares, citing rising costs.
DEMAND FOR AT LEAST A 30% INCREASE
Eyüp Aksu, the President of the Istanbul Chamber of Taxi Drivers, stated that the increase in the minimum wage directly affects expenses in the sector and announced a demand for at least a 30% increase in taxi fares. Aksu stated that the request for an increase was submitted to the IMM Council and the Directorate of Public Transportation Services, emphasizing that the increasing operational costs were at the core of the demand.
Aksu expressed that the increases in fuel, maintenance, insurance, and personnel costs particularly burden taxi drivers, highlighting the importance of the regulation for the sustainability of the service.
WHEN WAS THE LAST INCREASE?
Whether there will be a new increase in Istanbul taxi fares, which were last increased in September 2025, will be clarified with the decision to be taken by the IMM in the upcoming period. If the demand for an increase is accepted, a significant increase in taxi fares in Istanbul is expected in the new year.
